HOW TO BECOME A PRIVATE INVESTIGATOR ?

To practice as a private detective, you must either have professional experience specified by decree, or follow an ad hoc study program.   With regard to training, it is necessary to obtain the diplomas recognized by the National Register of Professional Certifications (RNCP).   Currently, only four institutions provide the necessary training: the University Paris II-Assas, the University of Nîmes, IFAR (Training Institute of Research Agents) and ESARP (School of Private Investigators).

It is then necessary to obtain an approval from the National Council for Private Security Activities (CNAPS) which verifies the conditions set out in Article L622-7 of the Internal Security Code:

 1 ° Be of French nationality or a national of a Member State of the European Union or one of the States Parties to the Agreement on the European Economic Area;

2 ° Not to have been the subject of a sentence of correctional punishment or a criminal penalty registered in the bulletin n ° 2 of the criminal record or, for the foreign nationals, in a document equivalent, for reasons incompatible with the exercise of functions;

3 ° Not to have been the subject of an order of expulsion not repealed or a prohibition of the French territory not entirely executed;

4 ° Not having been the subject of a decision, pronounced on the basis of the provisions of Chapter III of Title V of Book VI of the Commercial Code or taken into application of the texts prior to this code and not having made the subject of a decision of an equivalent nature in another Member State of the European Union or another State Party to the Agreement on the European Economic Area;

5 ° Do not engage in any other activity related to private security;

6 ° Hold a professional qualification defined by decree in Council of State.
